—— Ministry: Youth ——
Pineville UMC applies the United Methodist Church’s Safe Sanctuary policies to everyone who works with children and youth.
Pineville UMC’s Youth Ministries reach out to youth and their families to assist them in striving to build a personal relationship with Jesus Christ through personal commitment, fellowship, fun and the word of God.
The Youth Ministry concentrates on fulfilling these needs by:
- developing and deepening faith through Bible Study, community service, fellowship, music, drama and dance;
- making disciples of other teens who do not know or have a close relationship with God;
- setting examples in leadership, service and actions for people of all ages to follow;
- encouraging others to realize a stronger love for each other and God, without losing touch with oneself; and
- bringing new friends and family into the group so they can experience both the love of Christ and fun activities.
The youth concentrate individually on building their relationships with God and constantly strengthening and supporting each other in preparation for the faith journey.
Pineville UMC's youth meet every Sunday from 4:30 -- 6:30 p.m. in CrossRoads Center Room CC9.
All youth in grades 6 through 12 are welcome to join the group.
There is no cost to join Pineville UMC's Youth or attend meetings; other costs may be required, depending on the activity.
Reba & Charles Baker Scholarship Fund
The Reba and Charles Baker Scholarship Fund assists church members (both youth and adults) who wish to further their education beyond high school. Originally established in 1993 by Charles Baker in memory of his wife, Reba, the fund has helped over 100 church members cover the costs of tuition, books, housing, etc. While providing financial assistance is a key component of this fund, it also helps to maintain a spiritual connection between the student and their church family while he or she is in school.
Applicants must be members of Pineville UMC and be accepted by an institution of higher learning (two- or four-year), community college or vocational/technical school. Students may apply up to four times.

Confirmation Class
The purpose of Confirmation Class in the United Methodist Church is to prepare young people for the responsibilities of full membership in the local church by helping them understand what it means to be a Christian, and particularly what it means to be a United Methodist Christian. Through field trips; activities; readings; and discussions with the pastor, mentors, parents and/or guardians, members of the congregation and other young people, students will study the Bible, the history and tradition of the Christian Church, the history and tradition of the United Methodist Church and the history of their local church.
Pineville UMC uses the Making Disciples curriculum by Bishop Will Willimon. This literature puts primary emphasis on the relationship between mentor and student.
There is no cost to join the confirmation class.

Mission Trips
The youth take a week-long mission trip to the North Carolina coast or mountains during each summer. They leave on Sunday morning and return the following Saturday. Both middle high and senior high youth participate.
Mission trips are designed to help people in need while building the youths’ relationships with God. The trips provide a much-needed spiritual awakening as the youth get to know new people while working for God and seeing their peers praising the Lord.
Sometimes, the senior high youth attend Carolina Cross Connection or CrossBridge, sister Christian outreach ministries located in western North Carolina (CCC) or eastern North Carolina (CrossBridge). Together with other youth and youth groups, college-aged folks and adults, they perform a variety of home repairs, such as building wheelchair ramps, repairing porches, painting, yard work and more. Campers also strive to meet the social, emotional and spiritual needs of the recipients and to share the love of Christ with them. Both camps provide an opportunity for youth and adults to grow in their faith through worship, devotions, team-building and other in-camp activities.
The 2012 Summer Mission Trip will be held July 15 - 21 at Carolina Cross Connection.

Service Projects
Pineville UMC youth serve the community through working with Habitat for Humanity, participating in the CROP Walk, managing SPIFFY (Service Projects Intended for Funding Youth) home improvement and other projects for church members and mission trips.
SPIFFY projects are back! We're working hard to achieve our goal: our weeklong mission trip in June. We're available for yardwork, mowing, small handy projects, repairs and general cleaning. SPIFFY projects should be able to be completed in two or three hours so we can fit more jobs in each weekend.
If you have a job for us, contact Stephanie Jenkins (704-889-2022). Include your name and contact information, your job and estimated completion date. Thanks for supporting Pineville UMC's Youth!

Social Events
The youth schedule fun activities outside of church hours such as movie/game nights, after-church meals, concerts, swimming parties and more. Special times of fellowship and devotion designed to bring members closer to each other and God are included.
Beach Trip
A mid-September beach trip to Cherry Grove, S.C., kicks off the school year and welcomes sixth graders into Pineville UMC’s youth group. Warm weather and water contribute to a fun weekend of games and fellowship on the beach and in the rental house, including a night of skits, role plays, and spontaneous melodramas.
Camping Trip
The youth spend a weekend of fun, fellowship and devotions in the great outdoors each spring. Participants have the option to "rough it" by bringing a tent or sleeping in cabins with bunks.
The 2011 Spring Camping Trip has ended. Watch this space for details about the 2012 camping trip.
Fall Retreat
Another weekend of fellowship and fun in the fall!
Lock Ins
Occasionally, the youth spend a night of fun and fellowship in the CrossRoads Center. Movies, games, snacks and devotions make for a safe sleep-over!
Ski Trip
The youth take an annual ski trip to Winter Place Ski Resort in Ghent, W.V. They usually meet on the Friday evening of the long Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend to drive to the resort. Everyone, from beginner to advanced skier, takes to the slopes. Following a full day of skiing on Saturday, the youth have devotions and go out to dinner. They ski for a half-day on Sunday and arrive home in the evening.
SKI TRIP!!! The youth will be going skiing at Winterplace in West Virginia Feb. 24-26th. There are limited spots available. Please contact Stephanie Jenkins at 704-889-2022 or sjenkins@pinevilleumc.org if you are interested in attending or if you are interested in sponsoring a youth member to go on the trip. Back to top
